Concept Snapshot

Definition
These questions blank out a word and ask which choice "completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase."
What the SAT tests
Reading the sentence's internal logic — contrast, cause, tone — to predict the missing word before looking at options.
Key rule
Predict first. Cover the choices, decide what the blank must mean, THEN find the match.
Most common mistake
Picking the hardest vocabulary word, or a word that fits the topic but breaks the sentence's logic.

How the SAT Tests It

Pattern

Contrast Clue

A pivot word signals the blank opposes something stated.

Clue: "but", "however", "despite", "although"
Pattern

Definition Clue

The sentence itself defines the blank right before or after it.

Clue: Commas, dashes, "that is"
Pattern

Tone Match

The blank must match the passage's attitude — critical, admiring, neutral.

Clue: Loaded surrounding adjectives

Worked Example

"Although the committee praised the proposal's ambition, its members remained _____ about the timeline, noting that similar projects had routinely run years late."

Find the word the sentence's logic requires — not the fanciest one.
"Although…praised" signals contrast: the blank must pull AGAINST praise. The "routinely run late" note confirms doubt.
Prediction: something like doubtful or unconvinced.
"Skeptical" matches. Check the trap: "hostile" is too strong — doubting a timeline isn't hostility. Precision beats intensity.

Try It Yourself

"The 19th-century naturalist's field notebooks were once dismissed as amateur scribbles, but historians now regard them as _____ records: careful, systematic, and unmatched in their detail of species since lost." Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word?

Common Traps

What students do

Choosing by difficulty or by topic association.

Why it fails

The SAT plants advanced words that are logically wrong and simple words that are right — difficulty is camouflage.

Do this instead

Predict a simple filler word first. Any option that can't replace your prediction is out, however impressive it sounds.
