How the SAT Tests It
Factor Match
Which expression is equivalent to a given quadratic?
Clue: "is equivalent to"Structure Spotting
Recognize difference of squares or perfect-square trinomials in disguise.
Clue: Two perfect squares, minus signPlug-In Check
When factoring stalls, test x = 2 in both expressions.
Clue: Any equivalence questionWorked Example
Which expression is equivalent to 4x² − 25?
Try It Yourself
Which expression is equivalent to x² − 6x + 9 − y²?
Common Traps
Expanding (x + y)² as x² + y².
Squaring a sum creates a cross term — (x + y)(x + y) has an inner and outer product totaling 2xy.
Memorize all three: (x+y)² = x² + 2xy + y², (x−y)² = x² − 2xy + y², (x+y)(x−y) = x² − y².
